Leaders of the
Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians have made changes to the tribe's drug testing policy.
According to Secretary-Treasurer Michelle Beaudin, only new hires will be tested for drugs. For existing employees, random drug tests are being eliminated altogether -- tests will only be conducted "for cause,"
according to a tribal news release.
Also, the tribe will no longer screen for marijuana. The drug otherwise remains illegal under federal and Wisconsin law.
The changes came after new
leaders of the tribe were sworn in last month. Gary “Little Guy” Clause, Glenda Barber, Michelle Beaudin and Lorraine Gouge joined Louis Taylor, Tweed Shuman and Don Carley on the governing board on July 3.
In addition to Beaudin as Secretary-Treasurer, Taylor is serving as Chairman and Gouge is serving as Vice Chair. They voted to change the tribe's drug testing policy at a meeting on July 15, Wisconsin Radio Network reported.
The tribe is the largest employer in Sawyer County, the network reported.
