ARLINGTON, Virginia -- Rep. Deb Haaland (D-New Mexico) might be new to Congress but she's familiar to the United South and Eastern Tribes.

Haaland first spoke to USET as a candidate for New Mexico's 1st Congressional District seat. She's since made history as one of the first two Native women to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"I am here because of Indian Country," Haaland told USET members as they opened their 2019 Impact Week meeting at a hotel outside the nation's capital.

"Indian Country showed up for me and that’s why I'm standing here today," said Haaland, who is a citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna, acknowledging the support she received during her landmark campaign.

USET will continue their meeting all week, with some sessions taking place in Arlington and others in Washington, D.C., not far from the U.S. Capitol.
