Authorities in Arizona announced the arrest of Nathan Sutherland, 36, for the sexual assault of a woman from the
San Carlos Apache Tribe.
Sutherland was a nurse at
Hacienda Healthcare in
Phoenix, where the 29-year-old woman was a patient when she was raped. She later gave birth to a boy.
"From the minute we first became aware of the crime, we have virtually worked nonstop seven days a week to resolve this case,"
Police Chief Jeri Williams said at a press conference on Wednesday morning, The Arizona Republic reported.
Sutherland was identified as the father of the woman's baby through a DNA test, according to authorities. He is being held in custody at the Maricopa County Jail.
The woman suffers from developmental disabilities but is not in a coma or in an unresponsive state, as previously reported. She has been in care since a young age.
The boy, who was born on December 29, 2018, is in the care of the woman's family.
