'Chief Wahoo' logo disappears as baseball team plays in Canada

Two years after a Native architect took aim at the Cleveland professional baseball team's racist imagery, the "Chief Wahoo" logo has disappeared from a series of games in Canada.

Architect Douglas Cardinal tried to get the team's name and logo banned in Ontario due to its stereotypical and offensive depiction of Native people. But while he ended up losing his human rights complaint, he has scored a late victory as the "Chief Wahoo" logo isn't appearing on players' uniforms during four games in Toronto, according to news reports.

The team hasn't publicly explained why the logo has temporarily gone away. It is due to return for all following games, according to MLB.Com, the official website of Major League Baseball.

But the 2018 season is the last in which "Chief Wahoo" will appear on the uniforms. In an announcement in January, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said the logo was no longer "appropriate" to use on the field.

Manfred, however, he did not offer thoughts on the team's actual race-based name. And the team will still be able to sell "Chief Wahoo" merchandise in northeast Ohio.
