The
Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians, also known as the Gun Lake Tribe, is hosting the 3rd annual Sweet Grass Moon Pow Wow this weekend.
The event, known as
Wishpemishkos Gises in the Potawatomi language, takes place July 14-15 at
Camp Jijak in Hopkins. The weekend's events include a purple shawl honor song in recognition of efforts to combat domestic violence, a sobriety walk and a traditional feast.
"It’s a cultural celebration is really what it is, and it’s an opportunity for the singers and dancers to do a presentation of traditional ways of the Nishnabek," tribal spokesperson James Nye told The Holland Sentinel.
The powwow is free but guests are asked to bring a canned good or dried food item for the Annetta Jensen Project Hope Food Pantry.
