A former
Miss Indian New Mexico was asked if she was a "Mexican" and told she could be "deported" while shopping in California earlier this week.
Nicole Kabah Johnny was in Los Angeles on Sunday when the incident unfolded. In a post on social media and in an interview with
babe, the
Navajo Nation citizen said she was treated rudely by a security guard who was monitoring the line at the at the
KKW Beauty pop-up store.
"Get back in line and wait or I'll make a call and get you deported. You're Mexican, right?" the security guard said, babe reported.
Johnny, who is pursuing a master's degree at Pepperdine Graziadio Business School, snapped back.
“You’re forgetting who’s the immigrant here. You can take your ass back to Europe," Johnny wrote on social media. "I’m Diné and was here before all you European immigrants came.”
Johnny entered the store with her mother but she said the security guard kept harassing her while she was browsing the products.
"If you're not going to buy anything, I need you to leave," he reportedly said.
Johnny ended up contacting
KKW Beauty, a company owned by Kim Kardashian West, and shared her experience. She was told that an investigation into the security guard's behavior was underway.
"I truly hope that real change will occur," Johnny wrote in a follow-up poat. "But I’m also glad that they take this seriously and have a zero tolerance for any type of discrimination. No one deserves this type of treatment."
Johnny served as Miss Indian New Mexico from 2014 to 2015.
