Blackfeet Nation sends warning to drug dealers with banishment decision

The Blackfeet Nation has banished a convicted drug trafficker from its reservation in Montana, The Great Falls Tribune reports.

Chairman Harry Barnes told the paper that federal prosecutors aren't doing enough to protect the community from drugs. So the tribe is sending a warning to others by banishing Mark John Keuter Jr., who has been convicted of methamphetamine and marijuana trafficking.

“If I am a drug dealer and come to a reservation, I likely won’t be prosecuted,” Barnes told the paper. “It’s a catch and release program, that’s why there’s such prevalence on reservations.”

Keuter has been sentenced to five years in state prison for his crimes, the paper said. He is not a tribal citizen.
