Grand Ronde Tribes reclaim ancestral property from British museum

The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde have debuted a new exhibit at their Chachalu Museum and Cultural Center in Oregon.

Rise of the Collectors features ancestral items recently reclaimed from the British Museum in London. The 16 bowls, baskets and other patrimony were first taken from Grand Ronde homelands in the 1870s before they ended up overseas, The Associated Press reports.

“In my heart, I felt like, ‘Those are ours and we need repatriate — whatever means we can to have those returned here,’” Chairwoman Cheryle Kennedy told the AP. “It’s really the spirit within our people that I felt crying out.”

The exhibit, which officially opened on Tuesday, runs through May 2019. It also includes other tribal items.
