Blackfeet Nation issues licenses for bison hunt outside of Yellowstone

Citizens of the Blackfeet Nation will be exercising their treaty rights during a bison hunt next week.

The tribe offered licenses to hunters who want to take bison in areas of Montana outside of Yellowstone National Park. All 80 licenses were snapped up in a matter of hours, The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported.

“Our rights down in Yellowstone are well documented,” Chairman Harry Barnes told the paper. “We’ve been there forever and ever.”

The Blackfeet Nation retains treaty rights to hunt off the reservation. But the state of Montana was slow to recognize those rights even as it did so for other tribes, the paper reported.
