Fort Peck Reservation man due for sentencing in assault of 4-year-old girl

A Montana man due to be sentenced for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl on the Fort Peck Reservation.

Federal prosecutors are seeking a life sentence for John William Lieba II, 22, the Associated Press reported. He was found guilty in April of kidnapping, aggravated sexual abuse and assault resulting in serious bodily injury, The Great Falls Tribune reported.

The incident occurred in February 2016. The girl was taken from a playground in Wolf Point and wasn't found until two days later.

Leaders of the Fort Peck Tribes have tied the incident to a rise in methamphetamine abuse on the reservation. In a sentencing memorandum, Lieba's attorney said his client suffers from "serious substance abuse and mental health issues that need to be addressed."

Lieba is scheduled to be sentenced on Wednesday, the AP reported.
