A car accident has claimed the lives of five people on the
Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
According to news reports, the accident occurred on Saturday night near the community of
Red Shirt. The dead include four children and one adult from the Siers / Little family on the reservation.
"Many know tragically and unexpectedly 4 children Jeremy, Janae, Winyan, and Mato passed away in a car accident along with Unci Wanda Siers," a
fundraiser on YouCaring reads.
Unci means grandmother in the Lakota language.
Four others suffered injuries, according to news reports. The YouCaring fundraiser said they were children and are being hospitalized in Rapid City.
"My family is so devastated right now," a niece of Siers wrote on Facebook on Sunday morning.
According to another relative's post, Jeremy was 12 years old. Janae was 10 years old. Mahto was 8 and Winyan was 5.
The Pine Ridge Reservation is home to the
Oglala Sioux Tribe.
