Eastern Cherokee chief questions fairness of impeachment hearing

Chief Patrick Lambert of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians took the stand in his own impeachment hearing on Tuesday.

According to news reports, Lambert questioned whether he was being treated fairly by the tribal council. He denied the charges against him, saying he was not guilty of taking advantage of his office or abusing his authority.

“If this body wants to vote me out, that is within their power to do and I will accept that. However, is that fair? Is the right thing to do? I think not," Lambert said, The Asheville Citizen-Times reported.

The proceedings began on Monday and are continuing on Wednesday. Live and archived videos are available at EBCI Communications on Livestream.

The tribe is based in North Carolina.
