The Red Lake Nation is flying flags at half-staff following the passing of Secretary Don Cook.

Cook died in Fargo, North Dakota, due to complications from diabetes on Monday evening, the tribe reported. He was 74.

Cook, who was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, was first elected as secretary in 2010. Prior to that, he served as a legal representative, lay advocate and in several other capacities for individuals within the tribe's court system in Minnesota.

Funeral arrangements are forthcoming.
