Whiteclay liquor stores aim to stay open pending fight for licenses

Four liquor stores in a small town near the Pine Ridge Reservation are trying to stay open after losing their licenses.

The stores in Whiteclay are supposed to shut down by Sunday, when their licenses expire, the Associated Press reported. But they have asked a judge in Nebraska for permission to remain open while they fight the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission over the loss of their licenses.

The commission revoked the licenses after hearing complaints about law enforcement, social and welfare issues in the tiny community. Native activists and their supporters said the sale of millions of cans of beer every year exploits citizens of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

Whiteclay is only a few miles from the Pine Ridge border, where liquor is outlawed. Fewer than a dozen people live there.
