The American Indian Library Association is joining other organizations in opposing the elimination of funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services. President Donald Trump wants to cut the agency's entire budget in fiscal year 2018. If that happens, libraries, museums and other educational and cultural institutions in Indian Country would be severely impacted. "Without federal funding, many tribal libraries and archives may face closure or severe cuts in services," the association said in a statement. In 2016, the agency awarded 226 Native American Library Services Basic Grants and 14 Native American Library Services Enhancement Grants to tribal libraries, according to the organization.
