Oklahoma Democrats hire LaRenda Morgan as first Native liaison

LaRenda Morgan.

LaRenda Morgan, a citizen of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, is the first Native American liaison for the Oklahoma Democratic Party.

Morgan, who ran for state office last year, plans to reach out to tribes and their citizens to get them more involved in political affairs, The Oklahoma Gazette reported. In doing so, she hopes to make the Democratic party more friendly to Indian Country.

“Even now, as I take people into events, there’s still a standoffish feeling between the people in the party and the Natives I’m bringing,” Morgan told The Oklahoma Gazette. “That’s the barrier I’m hoping to break so when I try to recruit Natives to be involved, they won’t have that feeling.”

Native Americans represent about 9.1 percent of the population in Oklahoma, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
