Former U.S. Congressman Eni H. Faleomavaega (D-American Samoa), a longtime friend to Indian Country, died on February 22, the Associated Press reported. He was 73.

Faleomavaega, who fought in the Vietnam War, served on the House Committee on Natural Resources, where he defended tribes on sovereignty, land-into-trust, gaming, economic development and other matters. Even though he lacked voting power on the House floor, he was able to introduce and advance Indian bills at the committee level.

During his later years in Congress, Faleomavaega was pushing for the Washington NFL team to get rid of its racist mascot.
