RAPID CITY –– Outgoing Chairman John Yellow Bird Steele called to order the first meeting of the 2017 Great Plains Tribal Chairmen’s Association (GPTCA) on Friday, January 5. First order of business was the election of new officers.

Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Chairman Harold Frazier was elected new GPTCA Chairman. According to Gay Kingman, GPTCA Executive Director, “Chairman Frazier has served in this capacity in prior years, so Tribal leaders anticipate he will be able to ‘hit the ground running,’ which is greatly needed given all the issues we’re confronting.”

Robert Flying Hawk, Yankton Sioux Tribe Chairman, was unanimously reelected as GPTCA Vice-Chairman, as was Tony Reider, Chairman of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, as Secretary/Treasurer.

Yellow Bird Steele encouraged the new GPTCA leadership to keep going forward on all issues and to continue working together in unity. Singling out Kingman and her position papers, Yellow Bird Steele said, “She never forgets our treaties in all of her writings and we must always remember to remind people of the United States obligations that stem from our treaties.”

Newly elected Frazier thanked the outgoing Chairman for his contributions and leadership: “John is a Vietnam veteran and a long time tribal leader; his service extends not only for Oglala but to all the tribes of the Great Plains.”
