A Native man and his wife lost their two daughters in a tragic accident in New York City earlier this month. Pete Ambrose, who is Maliseet from Maine, and his wife, Danielle McGuire, were living in city-provided housing when a radiator burst on December 7. The steam that escaped scalded Ibanez Ambrose, 2, and Scylee Vayoh Ambrose, 1, causing their deaths. The family moved to New York from Maine, where Ambrose at certain times had lived on the reservation of the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, The New York Times reported. McGuire is non-Indian but lived in the same town as Ambrose, according to the paper. In New York, the couple was placed in temporary housing because they were considered homeless, the paper reported. They had been living on Hunts Point Avenue in the Bronx for a little over a year prior to the incident, according to the lengthy account provided by The Times. "we r completely and utterly misseable...no friends no neghbors that have any common intrests and the LITTERALLY only white/Native couple In all of Hunts point," Ambrose wrote on Facebook in August, the paper reported. The paper reviewed the couples' social media accounts to piece together their lives in the city. Both appeared to be loving parents despite facing problems with money, housing and substance abuse, the paper said. A GoFundMe page set up by relatives has raised more than $18,000.
