The Muscogee Nation of Oklahoma has laid off more than 100 employees due to financial and management problems in the tribe's health agency.

A total of 123 workers were let go and 55 others were transferred elsewhere, the tribe confirmed in a press release on Tuesday. Additionally, the Department of Health will be eliminating some services and will be closing one facility.

"Leadership right now is doing the best they can to help provide the best quality care for our tribal citizens," a spokesperson for the tribe told KTUL. "Although it is unfortunate what took place, it is something that had to be done to prevent any more deficit for the tribe."

Speaker Lucian Tiger of the Muscogee National Council also released a detailed letter outlining the health department's woes. He traced the situation to the acquisition of four facilities in 2013, which he said led to a series of financial and management problems.
