RAPID CITY –– Native Sun News Today extended a debate invitation to Paula Hawks and to Kristi Noem (R-South Dakota) to a debate sponsored by NSNT. Hawks agreed to accept the challenge and so far Noem has not responded.

The debate would be held in Rapid City and moderated by Native Sun News Today. Most of the audience and questioners would be Native Americans interested in the issues which affect both reservation-living and urban-based tribal members in South Dakota.

On Thursday, Sept. 15, Hawks hosted a town hall meeting with community members at the downtown Rapid City Public Library. The following day she was the guest speaker at the Black Hills Forum and Press Club (BHFPC).

The District 9 Democrat from Hartford, grew up on a farm outside of Flandreau and her rural values came through in her introduction the nearly 65 citizens in attendance on Friday, “I’m well represented with my family and that’s really what it’s about for me. It’s about family, it’s about community. It’s about South Dakota.”

Hawks, a wife and mother of three, has been a teacher at West Central High School and holds a degree in biology from South Dakota State University and a master’s degree in Technology Education and Training.

During her success as a teacher, she became, “Sick of seeing my friends and peers leave the profession, and tired of listening to politicians lecture on education, I decided to run for the South Dakota State Legislature in 2012,” Hawks reports on her website hawksforhouse.com.
