The Quinault Nation is sending a delegation to North Dakota as the #NoDAPL movement continues to make waves. Twelve Quinault citizens are traveling with their elder canoe, Grandfather Canoe, to express solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and its efforts to stop the $3.8 billion Dakota Access Pipeline from destroying sacred sites and burial grounds. The delegation left Washington on Monday. “The Quinault Nation is proud to stand behind this peaceful protest,” President Fawn Sharp said in a press release. “It is the very same struggle we have here in our homeland, where we have been opposing the proposed expansion of oil terminals and oil trains. The cost is far too high." "We are not willing to allow more oil spills in our rivers either, and we will fight to protect our sacred grounds and cultural resources, just as the great Sioux Nation is doing," added Sharp, who also serves as the president of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians and the vice president of the National Congress of American Indians.

The Grandfather Canoe will be joining canoes from Alaska and the Pacific Northwest that are already en route to the #NoDAPL encampment near Cannon Ball, North Dakota. Quinault citizen Reggie Ward Jr. is coordinating the journey for his people. "We Native Americans are the traditional caretakers of the land,” Ward said. “We are traveling to share our culture and teachings and to learn from this great experience. It’s our tradition." According to the One People Canoe Society from Alaska, the canoes will participate in the Paddle To Standing Rock 2016, an "historic" journey down the Missouri River from September 7-9.
