The Defenders of the Sacred Water School is declaring success after the first day of classes at the Camp of the Sacred Stones in North Dakota. Alayna Lee Eagle Shield, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, helped organize Mní Wičhóni Nakíčižiŋ Owáyawa to educate young residents of the camp near Cannon Ball [Facebook | Twitter | GoFundMe]. She expressed gratitude as the community came together for the new initiative. "Our first day we had nothing except people stepping up to help and bringing what they had," Eagle Shield said on Facebook. To continue the effort, Eagle Shield said the school is in need of additional supplies, including:
Math and reading worksheets and games for multiple ages 3-14Supplies can be brought to the camp, which is located near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. Donations can also be mailed to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe:
Coloring books and crayons/markers
Beads and art supplies
Lacross sticks and equipment
Basketballs, soccer balls, kickballs (basketball hoops, nets for soccer if we can borrow)
Wood and deer hides for drum making
