Congressional hopeful seeks debate on South Dakota reservation

Hawks for U.S. House on YouTube: Rosebud Pow Wow Greeting - August 27, 2016

Paula Hawks, the Democratic candidate for U.S. House in South Dakota, is challenging her Republican opponent to a debate in Indian Country.

One debate and one forum have been scheduled with Hawks and Kristi Noem, the incumbent. But Hawks says that's not enough to address the issues of the nine tribes in the state.

"The tribes need to hear directly from us how we hope to stop the near total breakdown in federal governmental services in these communities and provide substantially better representation in Congress on their behalf," Hawks said in a video released by her campaign.

Native Americans represent nearly 9 percent of the population in South Dakota, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In the past, their votes have swayed close elections.

In neighboring Montana, the U.S. Congressional candidates met for a debate on Monday that was hosted by the Fort Peck Tribes, Mark Trahant reported. The Crow Tribe is also hosting a debate, Trahant reported.
