Tribes in Connecticut sponsor cruise for Republican delegates

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe are among the many entities and groups hosting events at the Republican National Convention this week.

The two tribes sponsored a cruise aboard the Goodtime III on Wednesday for Connecticut's delegation, according to news reports. Both tribes are politically active in the state.

“We have partners across every level of government, with people of many different affiliations,” the tribes told Hearst Connecticut Media. “Our presence at national conventions for both parties and other events is nothing new.”

Indeed both tribes are expected to host an event next week during the Democratic National Convention, The Connecticut Post reported. In the past, the tribes have sent representatives to both parties' conventions.

In the case of the Pequots, the tribe might have been a bit too eager to woo delegates, The Connecticut Mirror pointed out. The tribe paid a $40,000 fine in 2001 to settle allegations stemming from two different events hosted for officials at the Republican and Democratic conventions in 2000.

“Compliance with the ethics law is vitally important,” Peter Smith, a lobbyist for the Mohegan Tribe, told The Post. “We want to make sure we identify everyone who is reportable and we follow the procedures.”

The Republican convention wraps up on Thursday. The Democratic convention kicks off Monday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
