The Kenaitze Tribe of Alaska hosted a grand opening for its new Tyotkas Elder Center.

The 6,500 square-foot building serves the tribe's growing elder population. Anywhere from 30 to 60 elders stop in every day for meals, gatherings or just to visit.

“We’re expecting our numbers to grow,” manager Shayna Franke told The Peninsula Clarion. “Moving into this facility where we can have more people — we have a substantial increase of occupancy that we’re allowed to operate out of in here — we’ve seen additional numbers, so we’re really excited about that.”

The center is located on the tribe's campus in Old Town Kenai. The Dena’ina Wellness Center and other tribal programs are located nearby so elders can receive a wide range of services without traveling far.

The facility opened in March after about a year of construction.
