The Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut has resubmitted a federal recognition petition to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, The New London Day reports. In 2005, the BIA denied recognition to the Eastern Pequot Indians of Connecticut and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Indians of Connecticut. But the new petition claims to represent the "Historical Eastern Pequot Tribe," the paper reported. The BIA's Part 83 reforms to the federal recognition process otherwise bar previously rejected groups from submitting new petitions. In 2002, the Eastern Pequots won a favorable decision from the BIA but opposition from the state of Connecticut prompted the Bush administration to reconsider. Get the Story:
