Alex Van Bestler, a 23-year-old member of the Coushatta Tribe in Louisiana, died last week after being stung more than 1,000 times by bees.

The incident occurred on May 26 at Usery Mountain Park in Arizona. According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, Bestler was out hiking with his stepsister when a "large swarm" of bees attacked them.

The sister was able to make it to safety but Bestler was overwhelmed by the aggressive swarm, the sheriff's office said. Emergency responders were finally able to remove him from the scene before he was transported to a local hospital, where he was declared dead.
