Correction: The name of the United Keetoowah Band's late assistant chief is Charles Locust. An earlier version of this post gave the wrong first name.

The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma has a new leader.

Joe Bunch will serve as chief until a November 7 election, according to news reports. He replaces George Wickiliffe, who was impeached by the tribal council on Tuesday.

Bunch previously served as assistant chief. He was tapped for that post following the passing of Charles Locust in March 2014.
