A historic trading post will anchor a new arts, commerce and housing community at Kewa Pueblo in New Mexico. A housing development and a walking / biking path are sprouting up near the Santo Domingo Indian Trading Post. The building itself is due to reopen this summer thanks to a $1.5 million renovation, The Santa Fe New Mexican reported. “We grew up having the trading post,” tribal member Paul Coriz told the paper. “It was our Wal-Mart.” The trading post, as well as the new trail, will offer local artists a place to showcase their goods. A Rail Runner train station is already in operation at the site, bringing tourists to the reservation and shuttling residents to their jobs and schools. The original trading post opened in 1881 but closed for business in 1995. It was nearly destroyed by a fire in 2011, The New Mexican reported. Get the Story:
