The Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana will cheer on canoes, kayaks and other paddle craft for a 20-mile race to the reservation on Saturday.

The race starts in New Iberia and ends at the tribe's boat launch in Charenton. It's part of the Tour du Teche, an event that showcases the Bayou Teche.

According to organizers, the bayou's name comes from the Chitimacha word "qukx" or snake. Teche is how the word sounded to French settlers in the area.

Tribal members will wear t-shirts bearing a phrase that translates to "They ride on snake bayou" during the race. The Cypress Bayou Casino, the tribe's gaming facility, is one of the sponsors of the event.
