MITCHELL –– Native Sun News staff came home last week from the South Dakota Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper contest in Mitchell with the association’s top award, General Excellence.

“Quality journalism – and all that goes into publishing quality newspapers – is the hallmark of this year’s top winners in the SDNA Better Newspaper Contest,” association members said in the news release announcing the winners.

According to SDNA, General Excellence is “a measure of the newspapers overall – reporting, writing, photography, opinion, design and adverting. The SDNA General Excellence Awards is the measure of the newspapers overall quality and commitment to journalism.”

Staff at the conference, including owners Jackie and Tim Giago, Publisher Christy Tibbitts, Editor Ernestine Chasing and Sales Manager Kirk Dickerson were more than ecstatic when it was announced that Native Suns News was awarded first place in General Excellence for weekly newspapers over 2,000.
