RAPID CITY –– As part of the efforts to protect young Native American women and girls, many nonprofit, city-funded, state-supported, and federally-sanctioned groups in the Rapid City area are doing their part to house, educate, and empower their most-traumatized citizens.

Powwow is one of them cultural avenues which gives women and girls a voice and strength. The learning and sharing of culture is a positive attribute in one’s life, as it requires alcohol and drug-free participation.

For nearly 8 years now, Wambli Ska Drum & Dance Society provides opportunity, support, and culture to improve self-esteem and independence of young women and girls in Rapid City and surrounding reservations.

The dance group is one of the largest in the nation and provides a safe environment for over 200 dancers and singers once a week during their practice powwow held in Rapid City.
