The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is the first in southeastern Connecticut to deploy body cameras with its police officers.

The 27 officers are using the TASER system, The New London Day reported. They started training last month and began using the cameras on New Year's Eve, WTNH reported.

"We wanted to get ahead of the curve," Police Chief William Dittman told The Day. "We want to be the most proactive police department in the area."

The tribe will be storing footage for at least 180 days, WNTH said.
