Votes to be counted on waste dump impacting Pine Ridge

Native Sun News Correspondent HOT SPRINGS –– Residents rejoiced on Dec. 9, when the South Dakota Supreme Court ruled that ballots will be counted on a referendum aimed to prevent a toxic and radioactive oil fracking waste dump in Fall River County, adjacent to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. “Today is a day of celebration, as the people‘s voice will finally be heard,” said Sarah Peterson, one of the local residents who gathered more than 250 petition signatures to successfully place the referendum on the ballot in the Nov. 4, 2014 general election. “Our votes have been locked up in the safe since November’s election last year, and we are very happy that the Supreme Court decided for justice in Fall River County,” Peterson told the Native Sun News.
