Three Massachusetts residents are facing criminal charges for vandalizing a historic Wampanoag site with a swastika and other offensive messages.

Nicholas Berry, 26; Michael Deltoro, 22; and Kenneth McNulty III, 21, were arrested on Sunday in the Freetown-Fall River State Forest. Authorities said they defaced Profile Rock with brightly-colored spray paint.

"Profile Rock, a 50-foot outcropping of natural rock, shows a profile of what the Wampanoag native American tribe believe to be Chief Massasoit," the Freetown Police Department said on Facebook.

Profile Rock is located in Wampanoag territory and is managed by the state. Graffiti and vandalism remain problem at the site.

Massasoit was a sachem, or leader, of the Wampanoag Confederacy in the 1600s.
