PINE RIDGE –– After Red Cloud handily defeated Pine Ridge 54-8 in high school football Friday afternoon, Red Cloud Head Coach Tama I’atala shook hands with Pine Ridge rookie Head Coach Corey Shangreaux at midfield, offering praise for the effort the Thorpes had put out in the loss to their crosstown rival.

“Hey, you’re doing a great job, man,” I’atala told Shangreaux, “Because I know the kids will try hard for you.”

Three weeks previously Spearfish players had remarked that the Thorpes seemed to have given up on the field in their 47-6 loss to the Spartans. Former assistant coach Shangreaux had taken over from head Coach Sam Bravo on short notice at the start of the season, and the loss to Spearfish was followed by a 38-0 loss to Flandreau and a 60-0 mercy ruling at the hands of Hot Springs.
