The Tolowa Dee-Ni' Nation filed a land-into-trust application for a property in Brookings, California. The 1.28-acre site houses the tribe's new apartment complex, The Curry Coastal Pilot reported. Local officials welcomed the development but they aren't excited about the loss of tax revenue from the property. "The transfer means they would get out of paying property taxes but keep using the city services — police, water, sewer — for free," Mayor Ron Hedenskog told the paper. According to the paper, the tribe is expected to pay $17,927 in property taxes to Curry County this year. That would end if the Bureau of Indian Affairs approves the application. The apartment complex features 13 units and the tribe plans to add six more, the paper reported. The BIA is accepting comments on the environmental assessment through September 31. Get the Story:
