What does ‘English education’ really mean?

Summer is now a memory and schools have opened their doors for business. On the Pine Ridge parents are again facing a familiar anxiety brought on by long-standing high unemployment rates. Actually, it appears this particular time of the year is a dreaded and even disheartening experience for those Lakota parents who lack adequate resources to meet their children’s basic school needs.

Of course most understand that education is the way to enhance their chances of easing the destitution they were born into and grew up in. At the same time, our elementary schools appear oblivious to this dilemma as they juggle their time between complying with unsympathetic federal education policies and exposing Lakota culture to their students trying to establish cultural identity and belonging.
