BIA announces $1.75M in grants for tribal education programs

The Bureau of Indian Affairs announced $1.75 million in grant opportunities for tribal education programs.

Money is available through the Sovereignty in Indian Education Enhancement Program and the Tribal Education Department Grant Program. Applications are due September 21.

“Tribes have the best perspective on what their children need to learn and how the schools that serve their communities can become successful,” Assistant Secretary Washburn said in a press release. “I want to thank Congress for providing the funding that ensures tribes will be able to assume total control over BIE-funded schools and guide their children’s cultural and academic learning.”

The Sovereignty in Indian Education Enhancement Program helps tribes manage schools that were formerly controlled by the Bureau of Indian Education. Grants range from range from $100,000 to $200,000 per fiscal year, with awards to run for two years.

The Tribal Education Department Grant Program. helps tribes consolidate educational initiatives. Grants range from $25,000 to $150,000 per fiscal year, with awards to run for three years.
