Members of six tribes gathered for the opening of the Dhegiha Language Conference opened on Wednesday. The Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma is hosting the two-day event. Participants are discussing ways to keep the Dhegihan languages alive for future generations. "I've tried to teach her a little bit," Janis Carpenter, a member of the Osage Nation, told The Joplin Globe, referring to her granddaughter. In addition to the Quapaw Tribe and the Osage Nation, Dhegihan languages are spoken by the Kaw Nation, the Omaha Tribe, the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma and the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska.
