The House Subcommittee on Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs will hold a hearing on Wednesday. Three bills are on the agenda. They are:
• H.R.1157, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Mission Indians Land Transfer Act of 2015. The bill places about 1,400 acres in trust for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. Local opposition in Santa Barbara County, California is strong.The hearing takes place at 11am in Room 1324 of the Longworth House Office Building. A witness list hasn't been posted online. • H.R.2386, the Unrecognized Southeast Alaska Native Communities Recognition and Compensation Act. The bill reopens the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act to address certain villages that were excluded from the 1971 law.
• H.R.2538, the Lytton Rancheria Homelands Act of 2015. The bill places about 940 acres in trust for the Lytton Band of Pomo Indians. The tribe has reached an agreement with Sonoma County in California to address land use, taxation and other issues.
