Leader of Sault Ste. Marie Tribe convicted of drug possession

A leader of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Michigan has been convicted of drug possession.

Rita Glyptis, who represents Unit V on the board of directors, was convicted in tribal court of one count possession of marijuana, The Sault Ste. Marie Evening News reported. She was ordered to pay $230 in fines and other costs and was placed on 30 days probation, the paper said.

Glyptis remains in office. Linda Rogers, a tribal member, thinks that's wrong and is circulating a removal petition.

The conviction stems from an incident in January. Glyptis was found with marijuana in a hotel room at one of the tribe's gaming facilities.
