The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas has a new leader who is the first to be elected by popular vote.

Nita Battise was sworn in as chair in a ceremony last month, The Tyler County Booster reported. She previously served as vice chair.

In the past, the chair was selected by the council. But Battise is the first person to be elected to the post by the people, the paper reported.
