The Narragansett Tribe is working with the University of Rhode Island to identify ancestral sites and burial grounds that could be affected by off-shore wind energy projects. The tribe used to live in areas off the shore that are now submerged underwater. Protecting them from accidental disturbance is a top priority. “It would not only be a loss to the Narragansetts, it would be a loss to the world" if burial grounds and other sites are destroyed, John Brown, the tribe’s historic preservation officer told the Associated Press. Deepwater Wind plans to build a wind farm off the coast of Block Island, which is part of Narragansett territory. The company also has been working with the tribe to identify potential sites.
