Sorry folks, it’s only a joke
That’s why we sometimes take satire seriously
By James Giago Davies Recently I cooked up a satirical letter from Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender, and people took it seriously. I made it clear, right off the bat, it was satire, a “what if” fantasy scenario, but people tend to read what they want into what they read and so they did with this spoof letter. Apparently it has been circulated across the rez, and people are upset about it, since it has the Mayor saying some awful things about Indians and city government. No doubt there is deep truth in even the most outlandish fiction, and people should be concerned about this mayor and how the urban Lakota will be treated in Rapid City during his term, but the letter was not actually written by Steve Allender.
