The House Subcommittee on Indian, Insular, and Alaska Native Affairs will hold a legislative hearing tomorrow. Three bills are on the agenda. They are:
• H.R.1028, the Return of Certain Lands At Fort Wingate to The Original Inhabitants Act. The bill returns land at the former Fort Wingate Army Depot in New Mexico to the Navajo Nation and Zuni Pueblo. In the past, leaders of the two tribes have been at odds over the distribution of the land.The hearing takes place at 2pm in Room 1324 of the Longworth House Office Building. The witness list follows:
• H.R.2684, the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas Equal and Fair Opportunity Settlement Act. In the bill, the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas settles a long-running land claim in exchange for a reaffirmation of its gaming rights.
• H.R.2733, the Nevada Native Nations Lands Act. The bill places land in trust for the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribe, the Shoshone Paiute Tribes, the Summit Lake Paiute Tribe, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and the Duckwater Shoshone Tribe.
