The Hoopa Valley Tribe of California did not pay for the bail of a member charged with child abuse, Chairwoman Danielle Vigil-Masten said. Vigil-Masten responded to rumors about the criminal case against Kayla Muriel Brown, 21. The reigning Miss Na:tini-xwe’, or Miss Hoopa Valley, is accused of sexually abusing a minor. "For the record, the Hoopa Valley Tribe does not pay bail for any of our tribal members, nor do I personally," Vigil-Masten said in a press release, according to local media reports. “I reviewed the check register for all accounts payable checks written from March 1, 2015 through today. I did not notice any check written to a bail bond company,” added Steve Burbank, the tribe's chief financial officer. The tribe has not decided whether Brown will keep her title as her case proceeds through the state court system. The alleged abuse took place from June 2014 through January 2015, according to authorities in Humboldt County. “The allegations are very shocking and unfortunate,” Vigil-Masten said. “As a prior advocate for victims of domestic violence and assault, I have the utmost confidence in the judicial system.” Get the Story:
