Michael Jandreau, the longtime chairman of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, has been hospitalized since Friday, the Associated Press reports.

Jandreau is suffering complications from pneumonia , the tribe's attorney said. "[I]t's a serious situation, no question about it," Michael Jandreau told the AP.

Jandreau has led the tribe for 36 years. He has been at odds with some council members over his leadership style, a dispute that led a tribal judge to order the two sides to resolve their differences and hold a meeting.

A report from Human Rights Watch accused Jandreau's administration of failing to account for funds received from the federal government. Jandreau and his allies have denied any wrongdoing.
