The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a business meeting next Wednesday, March 18. Three bills are on the agenda. They are:
• S.35, A bill to extend the Federal recognition to the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians in Montana. The committee hasn't held a hearing on the bill in the 114th Congress but a similar bill was advanced during the last session.In addition to the three bills, the committee will consider the nomination of Jonodev Chaudhuri, a member of the Muscogee Nation, to serve as chairman of the National Indian Gaming Commission. A confirmation hearing was held yesterday. Committee Notice:
• S.438, the Irrigation Rehabilitation and Renovation for Indian Tribal Governments and Their Economies Act. The IRRIGATE Act provides $35 million a year from 2015 to 2036 to cover the costs of operations and maintenance at 17 of the largest irrigation projects in Indian Country. The committee held a hearing on the bill on March 4.
• S.465, a bill to extend federal recognition to six Virginia tribes: the Chickahominy Tribe, the Chickahominy Indian Tribe - Eastern Division, the Upper Mattaponi Tribe, the Rappahannock Tribe, the Monacan Nation and the Nansemond Tribe. The committee hasn't held a hearing on the bill in the 114th Congress but a similar bill was advanced during the last session.
